Once again we are hearing about TikTok being blocked in the US, Youtube is deplatforming people they disagree with, and Twitter is silencing those who speak out.
If you are somebody who relies on social media, or a website you do not control in any way for your living, you should seriously consider looking at having your own space online.
I have been a fan of Rooster Teeth productions for many years, basically since around the 2nd or 3rd season of their main show, Red vs Blue. Their founder Burnie Burns has always suggested that people build their own space online.
It seems like this should be obvious, if you have your own space, you are in control. You are responsible. This doesn’t just mean another social media, but your own URL + website, it may be simple and basic, but it is a place for your fans to go to interact with you.
You also want to control your own content. Make sure you save your files, back them up. have redundant storage drives. if youtube were to come along and delete my channel tomorrow, I’ll be fine, all of my videos are still mine and I can upload them to other sites if need be.
Mostly don’t worry. Platforms come and platforms go. Be willing to try out new stuff when it comes out, be willing to invest in new content. But always be in charge of you and your money.
